How do implants work?

A dental implant is a small “tooth root” that is placed into the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots and provide a strong, secure foundation for a replacement tooth or bridge that will be permanently fixed to the implant. The implant itself is made of titanium which is a biocompatible material that is accepted by the body without issue. This metal post will bond with the jaw bone and stimulate new bone growth around it so the post becomes a permanent part of the mouth.

After the implant has bonded to the jaw, a small connector post called an abutment is affixed to the top of the implant. After that, the replacement teeth are custom-designed to attach to the abutment to complete the smile restoration process.

What should I expect when getting implants?

Before you can get dental implants, you’ll need to meet with a dentist for a consultation and examination. The dentist will need to examine your teeth and gums to make sure there are no underlying oral health issues that could complicate the placement or healing process of your dental implants. If everything looks good, you’ll likely be able to get your dental implants during the same appointment as your consultation. In some cases, though, your dentist may need to take x-rays or need to perform other tests before he or she will be able to place your dental implants.

Once your dental implants are installed, you should follow all of the same dental hygiene practices you would follow with your natural teeth — brush twice a day with a toothbrush that has soft bristles, floss at least once a day, and rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash at least once per day. You should also avoid chewing on hard foods or smoking tobacco after your procedure. Doing so could damage your dental implants. You might also want to avoid alcohol for the first day or two after your implants are placed to allow for proper healing.
